Group Members: The moderators will be changing this group to Private in a few days. We work hard to keep this a group for cavers and people who want to be cavers. Facebook changed how Groups work a few months back, severely limiting the ability of us, the moderators, to keep this a group for cavers, and to keep out FB accounts that might be more interested in skimming your information for their personal gain. The moderators have noted a number of other large groups switching to Private for the same reasons, and we investigated this carefully before making this decision.
With those FB changes, currently any one can join our group without review by the moderators. That’s how FB now works unless we change the group to Private.
We have noticed a significant uptick is what appear to be ‘fake’ FB accounts joining our group. We have grown increasingly concerned about these accounts and why they have joined our community.
Facebook is interested in keeping people glued to their app to make more money. We are interested in keeping this a group where cavers can talk about caving We also do our best to keep this group free of spammers and scammers.
After the change, the general public will be able to find the group, cavers will be able to join after moderator review, but the general public will not be able to see who is in the group and read your posts. And ‘fake’ accounts will not be able to join automatically without review.
