Virginia Rappelling Fatality

Todays Charlotte Observer reports on the death of North Carolina caver Richard Carter Graham at the weekend. On Saturday Graham fell more than 200 feet whilst rappelling at Lori Cory Canyon Cave in the
southwest corner of Virginia near the border with Kentucky. Due to the remoteness of the cave it took five hours for companions to report the accident to authorities. Local emergency workers together with a rescue team from Bristol, Tennessee, began the recovery operation on Sunday morning which was completed on Monday afternoon. Exactly why Graham fell is unclear, it was initially thought that the rope he was using may have broken, however a later report at Coalfield.com states that there was nothing wrong with the rope and in fact another party descended the rope following the accident
