The International Congress of Speleology (ICS) is the world’s premier speleological event.
A function of the International Union of Speleology (UIS), it is held once every four years in a location selected by the delegates of the UIS member nations.
Cavers, cave and karst scientists, cave managers and educators will come together for this world premier speleological event to share knowledge and collaborate on research, discoveries and techniques in all the aspects that make up speleology.
The Australian Speleological Federation (ASF) is excited to be hosting the next ICS in Australia for the first time. This 17th ICS will be held instead of the Biennial Conference of the ASF.
Please note that this Circular, while containing much information about the ICS, may not hold all the information. More complete and up to date information will be found on the conference website https://www.speleo2017.com and if you still have questions please contact us at info@speleo2017.com.
Regular updates will be posted on this website.
Australia provides a safe destination and is one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit, with unique wildlife, white sandy beaches, world heritage listed natural wonders and one of the most diverse and ancient landscapes on the planet.
As the chosen location for the ICS, the city of Sydney offers beautiful harbour settings and a rich cultural diversity, ensuring delegates will be made welcome for a memorable conference experience.
There is easy accessibility, with well over 30 international airlines offering more than 600 international flight arrivals each week, including more than 250 flights from Asia and over 50 from the US. Good public transport is available from Sydney airport to the conference venue at Penrith, at the foot of the Blue Mountains.
As well as the usual ICS program of events, numerous pre and post ICS field excursions are planned to many parts of Australia and New Zealand. For partners and family considering accompanying participants an exciting program of interesting activities is planned.
Why not take this opportunity to build new or strengthen old friendships with cavers and colleagues from around the world? Our Congress organising team is working hard to deliver a world class event in 2017 and as you read through this Second Circular we hope you will be inspired to commence planning your visit down-under to this ‘Great South Land’, Australia, to attend the 17th ICS of the UIS.
