Short introduction
Focus of the congress is a comprehensive range of talks about topics in Fennoscandic-Baltic caves and caving.
Baltic Speleological Federation is organized for the first time in 2007 by the Swedish Speleological Federation in collaboration with FSUE, UIS and ISCA.
Topics
We are looking for contributions about the following topics. Contributions about other topics may
be submitted, but will only be considered in special cases.
Caves and the Quaternary landscape development:
How do we distinguish between postglacial caves, pre-Weichselian caves and pre-Quaternary caves? What does that imply with respect to causation processes. What kind of sediments do we find in the Scandinavian caves? Some Swedish bedrock caves have been tied to deglacial earthquakes – is this a general origin of postgacial caves? What processes made the pre-Weichselian caves survive the last Ice Age?
Cave conservation:
What are the experiences in our region with respect to cave management and conservation? What are the attitudes and politics towards non-speleological use of caves, like multisport competetitions? What are the conservation rules and practice in our countries?
Culture, history and archaeology:
Do we have examples of historical and prehistorical use of caves in our countries? Are there any preference for psuedokarst caves over true karst caves with respect to prehistoric use? What are the prospects of detecting interstadial or interglacial human occupation in our region? Are there legends where specific caves are involved?
Caves and climate:
What are the evidence of climatic change from our caves, like speleothem records, etc? How far back in time can we document climatic change from our cave deposits? Is the karst record unique with respect to dating and time resolution? What are the NS differences in climate records?
